Ogun State Commissioner for Forestry, Hon. Tunji Akinosi, has disclosed that trees replanting in the State's forest reserves, is essential to addressing environmental climate change.
Akinosi, who made this known in a meeting with timber contractors from Area J1, J3 and J4 in Abeokuta, said the forest would be completely depleted, if some contractors still partake in or back up illegal logging, flitch production and illegal farming in the State's reserves.
The Commissioner added that not less than five trees should replace one taken out of an environment, noting that timber contractors, as major stakeholders should complement the government's effort in forest regeneration and sustainability across the State.
"Aggressive replanting of trees is key as replacement for the major resources taken out of forest reserves, or else history will not be kind to us as people when generations after us talk about our actions during our time", he said.
He enjoined timber contractors to be concerned with replanting of trees, which are the main resources taken from the reserve.
In her response, the Head of the team Ijebu Igbo Timber Contractors Board of Trustees, Alhaja Bimpe Kazeem, said contractors are facing challenges with illegal fellers who attacked their monitoring team last year, saying the Board would not fold it hands and allow illegalities to be the order of the day in the reserves.
