The need for all and sundry to see cultural diversity, as a platform to collectively brainstorm, for better understanding and respect for one another, to pave way for development in the society, has been stressed.
Ogun State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Oluwatoyin Taiwo who dropped the hint in a chat with OGIS correspondent in Abeokuta, in celebration of this year’s World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, said it would translate to tolerance and dignity among the people.
Taiwo noted that as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), set aside every 21st of May to mark the day, it was expedient for the citizens to properly utilise the potentials inherent in individual’s cultural differences, to bridge the link between the past and a desirable future, as well as attain a sustainable development in the society.
‘’As we celebrate this day, I want to encourage us to see our differences as an advantage, and not as a means to destroy one another. Let us take cultural diversity as a vehicle of dialogue that would unite and not divide us’’, he admonished.
Highlighting further the benefits of cultural diversity, Taiwo pointed out that there are lots of economic and infrastructural advantages to be derived, if citizens love and cherish their culture and accept the differences as strength, irrespective of their tribes, beliefs and religions.
