The menace of human trafficking can be eradicated when Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), genuinely worked together for successful implementation of various intervention put in place.
Ogun State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Akingbolahan Adeniran made this submission in Abeokuta during a-day workshop with the theme; "The Basic Knowledge and Skills in Assisting Victims of Human Trafficking" for relevant stakeholders, saying cross-fertilisation of ideas would help in handling cases of human trafficking better.
Mr. Adeniran observed that teamwork would further strengthen the existing policies and programmes of government, as well as effort of international partners and NGOs, in tackling human trafficking, especially across the State's border areas.
Speaking in the vein, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Legal Matters, Mr. Olumide Mustapha stated that effective collaboration with law enforcement agencies was a strategy adopted to fast-track the dispensation of justice to the victims of human trafficking, noting that continuous public sensitisation on signs to watch out for during trafficking process would go a long way in reducing the menace.
Mustapha assured that issues on human trafficking would receive prompt attention, saying amendment of the constitution has expanded the scope of the National Industrial Court (NIC) to take up child-related matters, which include human trafficking.
In her submission, the Country Lead for Child First Welfare Foundation of Nigeria (CFWFN), Mrs. Peju Osoba said the Foundation has provided mentorship to over 200 victims of human trafficking to bring them out of the traumatic experience.
Osoba noted that her NGO was part of the Ogun State Task Force on Human Trafficking, promising that it would intensify more effort to reduce sharp practices on human trafficking-related issues.
