Confusion, uncertainty over Sunday Igboho’s detention in Benin, extradition to Nigeria

There is confusion after a court hearing over the extradition of embattled Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, failed to hold on Wednesday in Cotonou, the capital of Benin Republic.

Igboho was not brought to Court for the hearing by the Beninoise authorities, throwing the extradition process into uncertainty.

Recall that Igboho was arrested at Cardinal Bernardin International Airport in Cotonou, Benin Republic, on Monday night.

The Yoruba activist has been held by operatives of Brigade criminelle in Benin.

Igboho’s spokesman, Olayomi Koiki, in a live broadcast last night, said: “At this point, we cannot back down, all the lawyers are working tirelessly for his freedom.

“Let us continue to pray for Chief Sunday Igboho, the Yoruba movement hasn’t stopped.”

His lawyer, Yomi Alliyu, was making frantic efforts to ensure that Igboho was not repatriated to Nigeria by the Beninois government.

Meanwhile, former Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd) played a part in foiling the escape of the self-acclaimed freedom fighter

Igboho and his wife, Ropo, were on their way to Germany through the Benin Republic when they were stopped Monday night.

The details news reports that the Department of State Service, DSS, had declared Igboho wanted after its operatives carried out a midnight raid on his residence in the Soka area of Ibadan, Oyo.
