The Ogun State Government has pledged its continued support for the delivery of effective implementation of reproductive healthcare programmes, particularly, the Family Planning (FP) intervention.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker made this known in Abeokuta during a workshop on the Development of Costed Implementation Plan Document (CIP 2021-2024), organised by the Primary Health Care Development Board in conjunction with Pathfinder International.
Dr. Coker who revealed that the document would serve as a guide for FP activities in the State, which would be of benefit to the socio-economic development and growth of individuals, society and the nation at large, as well as the successful implementation of the Prince Dapo Abiodun's ISEYA mantra.
“Family Planning is not all about contraception, but an empowerment process for women of child-bearing age to make them contribute meaningfully to their immediate environment. Also, it will allow them choose when they want to have children”, she explained.
Contributing, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Tayo Lawal, emphasised the need to have clear understanding of FP, saying it translates to good health for women and economic safety for the family, charging participants to ensure proper costing that would make meaningful impact on the overall objectives of the exercise.
On her part, the Programme Officer, Reproductive Health and Family Planning, Pathfinder International, Kosi Izundu said the objective of the workshop was to come up with a realistic costing plan for the State’s reproductive and sexual health programmes, adding that her organisation was poised to continue to provide all needed technical assistance that would help the government meet its goals.
Contributing, the State Programme Coordinator and Technical Lead, The Challenge Initiative (TCI), Mrs. Busola Oyeyemi pointed out that the document would enable the State increases its Contraceptive Prevalence Rate from 32.1 percent to 46 percent by the year 2024, noting that it would also capture reproductive and sexual health programmes for adolescents and youths in the State.
Speaking on behalf of other participants, the State Youth Ambassador, Chidinma Ikeobi and Programme Director, Life Agenda Initiative, Mr. Olusola Taiwo commended the State government for its commitments towards reproductive and sexual health issues of women of child-bearing age, promising to come up with a realistic costing that would impact positively on the lives of residents.
