SPELLING BEE COMPETITION’LL ENHANCE READING CULTURE- OGUN PS
The repository capacity of the younger generation can be developed through Spelling Bee programme, which is an affective, cognitive and psychomotor ways of learning that will enhance reading culture among learners, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Mrs. Abosede Ogunleye has said.
Ogunleye who stated this at the 2021 Spelling Bee Competition, organised for students in secondary schools at Abeokuta Grammar School, Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, said the competition would revive the desire for reading among learners.
"It is no gainsaying the fact that reading culture is reducing in schools, therefore this Spelling Bee Competition is necessary to build learners’ capacity in English Language, which will help them stand tall among their equals", she said.
The Permanent Secretary noted that no nation could develop above the standard of her education, hence the need for such programme to improve academic performance of students.
She appreciated government for creating an enabling environment for learners to flourish, charging teachers not to relent in supporting students to pursue academic excellence.
In her welcome address, the Director, Education Support Services in the Ministry, Mrs. Adesola Onayiga, said the importance of right and correct spelling, good interaction, confidence, among others, could not be over-emphasised, adding that impeccable English is a yardstick for employment in the labour market.
Onayiga stressed that extra-curriculum activity, such as Spelling Bee competition would effectively aid all-round development of student, adding that the competition was aimed at selecting State’s delegates that would participate at national level.
