Buhari hails Pope’s appointment of Rev Ugorji as Owerri Archbishop

President Muhammadu Buhari has congratulated Rt. Rev. Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji on his appointment as Archbishop of Owerri Archdiocese in Imo State.

The Nigerian leader rejoiced with him on the new assignment by the Catholic Pontiff, Pope Francis.

Buhari called for his full commitment and dedication to the call of duty, as he did previously serving as Catholic Bishop of Umuahia and former Apostolic Administrator of the Ahiara Diocese.

He said the cleric brings humility, charity and focus to every position and that Ugorji’s choice to reflect Christ in selfless service to humanity has impacted greatly on the nation.

The President prayed for God’s wisdom and guidance for the cleric and wished his predecessor, Archbishop Anthony John Valentine (AJV) Obinna, divine grace.

Pope Francis appointed Ugorji to replace Obinna who attained 75 years, the mandatory retirement age for Bishops in the Catholic Church.

Born January 13, 1952, the new Owerri Archbishop was first ordained a priest at the age of 25.

Ugorji was appointed a Bishop by Pope John Paul II when he was 38 years old.
