Assembly moves to end Magodo land crisis

Speaker, Lagos State House of Assembly. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa

The recommendations of an 11-man ad hoc committee on the alleged conduct of executives of Gateway Zone Community Development Association, Magodo GRA Phase 1, has been adopted by the Lagos State House of Assembly.

This followed a resolution on a petition passed by the House at its plenary session on June 24, 2021, against one Oyebode Ojomu, purportedly acting for the CDA; General Manager, New Towns Development Authority, Adenrele Oni, and others.

According to a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, the recommendations of the committee were presented to the House by the Chairman, Sanai Agunbiade, who stated that investigation was carried out to ensure that the resolution of the House had been implemented.

The committee observed that a wet parcel of land in Magodo which fell under government acquisition in 1969 was excised and that compensation was paid to families of lands not excised.

The committee said the land in question had no approval for drainage channelisation to include drainage alignment and setback, hence it saw no need to seek approval for a layout from the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development for renewal.

In his submission, a lawmaker, Sa’ad Olumoh, lamented that the Magodo area had been in crisis leading to court judgments in recent times, just as he expressed delight that the recommendations would bring peace to the land owners.

Olumoh then called for the punishment of erring officials, adding that NTDA officials should be cautioned on delegation of duties.
