Railway: Cash only for tickets on Lagos, Warri corridors
NIGERIAN Railway Corporation (NRC) has said it will accept cash only in across counter transactions for tickets on Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS) and Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS) corridors.
The corporation runs three standard gauge networks – Abuja-Kaduna Train Service (AKTS), Warri-Itakpe Train Service (WITS), and Lagos-Ibadan Train Service (LITS).
It said contrary to reports, NRC use e-ticketing on AKTS, and cash on LITS and WITS.
NRC said it will deploy electronic payments on the two routes, and pleaded for compliance with the cash-only policy on the two routes.
Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Yakub Mamood, announced this in a statement.
He urged passengers, who want to use the other two routes to come to the train stations with notes that are legal tender as NRC no longer accepts old naira notes not legal tender.
“As we are aware of the currency policy introduced by the Federal Government, which redesigned some denominations of naira notes that are being gradually swapped with old naira notes, pending when the transition from old to new will be completed.
“We only accept cash across-the-counter for train boarding with the naira notes approved as legal tender ,” Mamood said.
He said on the AKTS, passengers have been enjoying on-line electronic train ticketing system seamlessly.
Mamood added: “NRC is appealing to passengers, especially on LITS and WITS routes, to bear with us, especially during this temporary commercial transaction challenges. We are bracing to deploy the on-line train ticketing system on LITS and WITS routes soon, with arrangement being concluded for hitch-free deployment of the technology.”
The spokesman said the corporation was working to migrate to on-line electronic passengers’ train ticketing system for all operations/services.
