Come up with policies that will reduce suffering – Anglican Bishop tells Tinubu

The Bishop of the Diocese of Owo, Anglican Communion, Stephen Fagbemi, has advised the president-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, to come up, as a matter of urgency, with policies that will alleviate the pains of Nigerians when his administration begins.

Fagbemi gave the advice on Thursday during the 40th-anniversary celebration of the diocese held at the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, Imola, Owo, headquarters of the Owo Local Council Area of Ondo State.

The bishop said Nigerians have been subjected to agony and pains over the years, hence the need for people-oriented programmes and policies that revolve around education, security and infrastructure. He added that the basic needs of the people should be given the highest priority.

He said, “Nigerians have been going through a lot of pain and agony. The president-elect must look at how to bring succour to the lives of Nigerians. We have gone through a lot, and the policies must be such that they can bring peace, hope, and comfort to the people.

“He must be able to provide employment and meet the basic needs of communities and the whole nation as a whole. Our economy must be improved, and so, of course, must our security, which is very important so that Nigeria can also stand tall.

“A lot of our young people are running away under the ‘Japa’ syndrome, so he ( Tinubu) must do something to help our people stay back so that we don’t have brain drain.”

According to the Anglican cleric, the church would continue to be the voice of the voiceless and give succour to the less privileged in society, saying “in years to come, the diocese will grow further in leaps and bounds to reach more people in the local communities around us.”

“The church will also be in a position to have more support for more people, so even the unemployed youths will find out that the church is a place for them to come,” he stressed.
