Don’t Die In Silence, Ogun First Lady Tells Gender-based Victims

The wife of Ogun State governor, Mrs Bamidele Abiodun, has urged women facing domestic violence to speak up, seek help and not die in silence.

She spoke during a town hall meeting with community-based women’s groups, teachers, artisans, parents and civil society organisations in Abeokuta.

The programme was organised by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) in collaboration with the state’s Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development.

In her remarks, Mrs Abiodun noted that many women battling domestic violence were afraid to speak up due to the fear of stigma.

“The major reason why victims of gender-based violence, be it rape or those being beaten by their husbands don’t like speaking up is due to stigma.

“They also always think that they won’t get the help needed but thankfully, we now have organisations speaking for women who need help. So, the narrative is changing.

“So, no woman should die in silence again. This advocacy should be taken to our communities, churches, mosques and everywhere,” she said.
