Stanbic IBTC Holdings facilitates training for Journalists at "TMTR" Training Room 

In a bid to improve the profession of Journalism in the country, Stanbic IBTC Holdings has organised a-one day training for selected Nigerian Journalists drawn from across online and traditional media outfits. The training, which was facilitated by the Lagos-based THE MEDIA TRAINING ROOM (TMTR) at Stanbic IBTC Tower, Walter Carrington Crescent, Victoria Island, Lagos State focused on how to gather and report activities in Nigeria’s banking and finance sector of the economy, how to

promote professionalism and ethical practice in the course of news gathering and news reporting, how to avoid falling into the landmines of fake news, unethical practices and cybercrime. 

The Don, Lagos Business School, Dr. Jekwu Ozoemere (FCIB), in his lecture titled " Essential of reporting Banking & Finance" said how the Nigerian media cover the country's banking and financial sector has been the subject of great debate especially during the 2007/08 global financial crisis as well as in preceding and subsequent years.

The facilitator, IBTC Training School, Toni Kan Onwordi who spoke on the topic “Keeping facts sacred in the age of social media, mis-information, dis-information, and mal-information" advised the Journalists to present news that is factual, correct, verifiable, informative and true. He also urged the journalists to embrace  accuracy, balance, objectivity, conciseness, fairness in their practices.

Deji Olatoye (Partner,The Lost Law offices), who spoke on the theme, “The cybercrime Act and the Nigerian media: Understanding the legal minefield" said the programme focused primarily on equipping the participants with tools and insights to better understand the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Detect, Prosecute and Punish) Act of 2015 and how the practice of journalism is evolving in the age of social media. He classified offences as Vertical and Horizontal for state and person, including corporation,forgery,fraud,ID theft,child pornography, cyberstalking cybersquatting, amongst others.  

Peter Okwoche represented by Toni Kan spoke on a title themed "Fake News: A case for Ethics and professionalism in the Nigerian Media" said fake news is false or inaccurate information that is presented as fact. According to him, fake news can come in form of stories, images or videos. Participants  were advised to go back to the basics of Journalism and ask themselves about the 5-Ws and how to manage fake news.

Bridget Oyefeso-Odusami, Head Marketing and Corporate Communications, Stanbic IBTC in her post-training remark commended TMTR for the initiative which she said is “imperative in this era when individuals and corporates are daily falling victim to fake news. Building capacity for media practitioners in this area, I believe, will enhance the quality of their reportage.”
