Building collapse: All trapped students rescued, no fatalities – Edo Govt

The Edo State Government has confirmed that all students trapped in the collapsed three-storey building in Benin City have been successfully rescued, with no fatalities reported.

This update was disclosed in a statement on Saturday evening by Mr. Crusoe Osagie, Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects.

He stated that an investigation is underway to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the collapse.

The building, located on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, collapsed early Saturday morning during a downpour.

Osagie noted: “The government confirms the collapse of a three-storey building on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City. A rescue team was promptly deployed, and all trapped students have been rescued alive and are currently receiving medical attention.”

He further added: “Emergency responders, including the Edo State Fire Service and officials from the Edo State Command and Control Centre, were deployed to the scene. As of now, no fatalities have been recorded. Excavators and other heavy equipment are on-site to clear the rubble and remove any remaining parts of the distressed building.”

The government has also ordered a thorough investigation into the incident and an audit of nearby buildings to assess their structural integrity.

Osagie concluded by expressing appreciation for the efforts of the emergency responders and community members who assisted in managing the situation.

“We commend the gallant work of the emergency responders and the good Samaritans in the community who helped manage the situation,” he said.
